Psalm 80 – A Prayer for Israel’s Restoration
Three times in Psalm 80, Asaph cries out to the LORD God
3,7,19 Restore us, O God;
Cause Your face to shine,
And we shall be saved!
Before the first occurrence, Asaph calls out to his God. The only One able to help.
1 Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel,
You who lead Joseph like a flock;
You who dwell between the cherubim, shine forth!
2 Before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh,
Stir up Your strength,
And come and save us!
Before the second occurrence, Asaph declares the LORD God’s anger against the sins of His people, and the fallout thereof.
4 O Lord God of hosts,
How long will You be angry
Against the prayer of Your people?
5 You have fed them with the bread of tears,
And given them tears to drink in great measure.
6 You have made us a strife to our neighbors,
And our enemies laugh among themselves.
But before the third occurrence, we find the solution to our woes.
17 Let Your hand be upon the man of Your right hand,
Upon the son of man whom You made strong for Yourself.
18 Then we will not turn back from You;
Revive us, and we will call upon Your name.
See here, the hand of Jesus Christ. See particularly, His bloody hands upon the cross. God has given salvation from our sins. His name is Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. Let us pray.
Dear Lord and heavenly Father,
You are great and greatly to be praised. Thank you Lord, Father, for making our sins known to us, but more so, for saving us from them in Jesus. We simply cannot account all of how we have transgressed Your goodness. And yet, from such overwhelming evidence, mercifully and gracefully, you have given salvation from such through Your Son. May the Holy Spirit ever be turning us towards Your holy throne of grace, where Christ is found. In His name, Amen.
