Psalm 122 – The Joy of Going to the House of the LORD

Published April 19, 2024 by Rev. Pete Van't Hoff in Devotions

When you wake up on Sunday morning, are you excited to go to church? Have you ever stood outside of a box office (actually, these days, tickets are all bought online) but have you logged-in the moment tickets were available and upon entrance to that event were you excited to get there and to be there? The Psalmist of Psalm 122 wants you to feel this way when entering the presence of your Lord, in worship.

1 I was glad when they said to me,
“Let us go into the house of the Lord.”
Our feet have been standing
Within your gates, O Jerusalem!

When in that concert hall, filled with beloved fans, waiting for the event to begin, what kind of anticipation is present? Do you anxiously wait to find yourself in the presence of your God amongst all others who share your godly desire?

Jerusalem is built
As a city that is compact together,
Where the tribes go up,
The tribes of the Lord,
To the Testimony of Israel,
To give thanks to the name of the Lord.
For thrones are set there for judgment,
The thrones of the house of David.

Finally, what can your favorite play or band or team do for your eternity, that God cannot do? Hear what coming to your God in worship displays before you.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
“May they prosper who love you.
Peace be within your walls,
Prosperity within your palaces.”
For the sake of my brethren and companions,
I will now say, “Peace be within you.”
Because of the house of the Lord our God
I will seek your good.

Let us pray.

Dear Lord and heavenly Father,

Blessed be Your holy name. Oh, that the churches would be filled with worshippers anxious to meet You. This privilege has been won for us, by the Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, and is being worked in us, through the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. May you ever be the centre of our worship as we are being made more Christ-like every day. In His name, Amen.
