Psalm 127 – Laboring and Prospering with the LORD

Published May 6, 2024 by Rev. Pete Van't Hoff in Devotions

King Solomon is not a prolific contributor to the Psalms, as much as he is in the Proverbs. But as he ascends towards Jerusalem, he has his home and his family on his mind; he has his land and his people to consider.

Firstly, his home and his land.

1 Unless the Lord builds the house,
They labor in vain who build it;
Unless the Lord guards the city,
The watchman stays awake in vain.
It is vain for you to rise up early,
To sit up late,
To eat the bread of sorrows;
For so He gives His beloved sleep.

Secondly, his family and his people.

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,
The fruit of the womb is a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.
Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them;
They shall not be ashamed,
But shall speak with their enemies in the gate.

Dear reader, the Lord Jesus Christ has built you a home, and through His shed blood, has made you family. The promised and sent Holy Spirit is with you. Let us pray.

Dear Lord and heavenly Father,

You are great and greatly to be praised. Unless You have willed it, unless the Son has won it, unless the Holy Spirit is in it, I am lost. But I have my eternal home waiting and I have my eternal family preparing for my arrival. Thank you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
