Psalm 149 – Praise to God for His Salvation and Judgement

Published June 28, 2024 by Rev. Pete Van't Hoff in Devotions

Psalm 149 is a psalm of comfort for God’s children and a psalm of warning for everyone else.

Firstly, it is a psalm of comfort for God’s children.

1 Praise the Lord!

Sing to the Lord a new song,
And His praise in the assembly of saints.

Let Israel rejoice in their Maker;
Let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.
Let them praise His name with the dance;
Let them sing praises to Him with the timbrel and harp.
For the Lord takes pleasure in His people;
He will beautify the humble with salvation.

Let the saints be joyful in glory;
Let them sing aloud on their beds.
Let the high praises of God be in their mouth.

Verse 6 is the transition verse from a psalm of comfort for God’s children to a psalm of warning for everyone else.

Let the high praises of God be in their mouth,
And a two-edged sword in their hand,
To execute vengeance on the nations,
And punishments on the peoples;
To bind their kings with chains,
And their nobles with fetters of iron;
To execute on them the written judgment—
This honor have all His saints.

Praise the Lord!

To which group do you belong? Through the broken body and shed blood of Jesus Christ, we are brought from warning into comfort. Praise the LORD! Let us pray.

Dear Lord and heavenly Father,

Blessed be Your holy name. Thank you Father for drawing me out of warning and into Your comfort, through Your Son, and by the strength of the Holy Spirit. Preserve and strengthen me through the work yet allotted to me. Praise the Lord! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
