Psalm 94 – God the Refuge of the Righteous

Published October 11, 2023 by Rev. Pete Van't Hoff in Devotions

Are you as concerned about God’s reputation as much as your own? The psalmist of Psalm 94 brings this to our attention.

1 Lord God, to whom vengeance belongs—
O God, to whom vengeance belongs, shine forth!
Rise up, O Judge of the earth;
Render punishment to the proud.
Lord, how long will the wicked,
How long will the wicked triumph?

Having called upon the Lord, the psalmist brings his concerns.

They utter speech, and speak insolent things;
All the workers of iniquity boast in themselves.
They break in pieces Your people, O Lord,
And afflict Your heritage.
They slay the widow and the stranger,
And murder the fatherless.
Yet they say, “The Lord does not see,
Nor does the God of Jacob understand.”

Having brought his concerns, the psalmist is confident that the LORD God will act.

20 Shall the throne of iniquity, which devises evil by law,
Have fellowship with You?
21 They gather together against the life of the righteous,
And condemn innocent blood.
22 But the Lord has been my defense,
And my God the rock of my refuge.
23 He has brought on them their own iniquity,
And shall cut them off in their own wickedness;
The Lord our God shall cut them off.

To conclude, I am reminded of Jesus’ earthly ministry, particularly against the wicked. In every debate they were put to shame, they were cut off. His ministry is so much more than that though. His earthly life, His Father found pleasing because it was His Father’s glory that He pursued and fulfilled. And in His death, your sins were washed away. In His glorious resurrection and ascension, your eternal life awaits. What a salvation for the people of the LORD God. Let us pray.

Dear Lord and heavenly Father,

Blessed be Your holy name. Thank You Father, that even though the wicked rage, the peace of Your salvation reigns. Thank You Father, for the ministry of Your Son. Thank You Father, for the presence of the Holy Spirit working the Son’s salvation in us. Blessed be Your holy name. In Christ, Amen.
