Psalm 123 – Prayer for Relief from Contempt

Published April 23, 2024 by Rev. Pete Van't Hoff in Devotions

In Psalm 123’s Song of Ascent, we are told who to worship and then why. First, dear reader, who will you worship?

1 Unto You I lift up my eyes,
O You who dwell in the heavens.
Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters,
As the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,
So our eyes look to the Lord our God,
Until He has mercy on us.

And now I’ll tell you why.

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us!
For we are exceedingly filled with contempt.
Our soul is exceedingly filled
With the scorn of those who are at ease,
With the contempt of the proud.

Our God is the God of mercy and we need need much mercy. In the Lord Jesus Christ, much mercy has been given. Let us pray.

Dear Lord and heavenly Father,

Blessed be Your holy name. Unto You I lift up my eyes. Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us! Thanks be to You for bringing us mercy through Jesus. Thanks be to You Father, to You Son, to You Holy Spirit, Three-in-One, for giving of Yourself for my wealth in You! In Christ, Amen.
