Psalm 124 – The LORD the Defense of His People

Published April 25, 2024 by Rev. Pete Van't Hoff in Devotions

Beloved, from where does your help come from? David, at Psalm 124, as he ascends to Jerusalem to worship, has considered the answer. But first he considers all that would be fall him if the LORD God was not his defense.

1 “If it had not been the Lord who was on our side,”
Let Israel now say—
“If it had not been the Lord who was on our side,
When men rose up against us,
Then they would have swallowed us alive,
When their wrath was kindled against us;
Then the waters would have overwhelmed us,
The stream would have gone over our soul;
Then the swollen waters
Would have gone over our soul.”

Thankfully, this is not the case for the believer. David sings the rest of this psalm, relieved.

Blessed be the Lord,
Who has not given us as prey to their teeth.
Our soul has escaped as a bird from the snare of the fowlers;
The snare is broken, and we have escaped.
Our help is in the name of the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.

It is this divine help from which the Lord Jesus Christ has come and from which the Holy Spirit proceeds according to the Father’s perfect will. Dear believer, your help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Let us pray.

Dear Lord and heavenly Father,

Blessed be Your holy name. How great You are. You do not remain hidden from us, but have revealed Yourself to us, through creation and now through Christ. You are our Help. Thanks be to You and to Your holy name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
